As General Hospital Fans Call For Gladys’ Head, Bonnie Burroughs Admits ‘It’s My Turn To Be Stuck In the Refrigerator’

It’s no secret that General Hospital viewers are not particularly happy with Gladys these days. After all, she is in large part responsible for the hell that Sasha — who was having a rough go of it even before her mother-in-law got involved — is currently experiencing.

Having seen the animosity being directed toward her alter ego on social media, portrayer Bonnie Burroughs totally gets it. “That’s fair,” she said on the Soap Opera Digest podcast. “I hope they love to hate her!”

Sasha and Gladys discuss mistake GH

That said, the actress wouldn’t be surprised if karma were to catch up with Gladys, especially given that upon taking the role four years ago, she only expected to be on for a few days. “I’ve had a really good story for a while now, and that’s going to continue on the air for a little while now,” she said. “I figure it’s my turn to be stuck in the refrigerator for a while, I mean both literally and creatively.”

After all, she elaborated, “people’s stories come and go, and I feel like, I don’t know, maybe my story is about to… ” stopping, she quickly added, “I don’t know what’s going to happen to her, people! I don’t know!”

Anybody who thinks Burroughs might jump on the Gladys-bashing bandwagon has another think coming. “From my point of view, yes, she screws up. Yes, she’s done a lot of damage. And the road to hell is paved with Gladys’ good intentions.”

Despite this, she insists, “I love Gladys. I stand by her!”

Gladys still worried GH

So, too, do her castmates. “I’ve expressed a little anxiety with [Maurice Benard] and Kirsten [Storms] about, ‘Oh my God, my character! She gets so much hate on line!’ And Maurice said, ‘Well, [Sonny has] killed people, and [he] slept with a 16-year-old.’ And [Maxie] also like drugged somebody and [slept with them]. So to be reminded of the awful things that people do on soaps just by definition is very reassuring to me. I could come back!”

Whatever the fates have in store for Gladys, Burroughs is prepared. “I realize it could always be over,” she acknowledges. “It could be over temporarily, for a long time or permanently, but whatever happens, I will always cherish the experience.”
